While out metal detecting near the coast, I was lucky enough to find a Roman brass finger ring, likely worn by a child or young woman due to its size.
The Romans were skilled in crafting jewelry from various metals, with brass being a popular choice, especially for those who couldn’t afford gold or silver.
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, was not only more affordable but also durable and versatile, making it ideal for everyday items like rings, bracelets, necklaces, and brooches.
The Romans used brass to create intricate pieces, often incorporating enamel, gems, or engraving to add detail and beauty.
It may not have been gold, but the fact that this adorned someone’s hand over 1500 years ago still sends a shiver down my spine.
The yellow arrow points to the French coast, just 25 miles away. The red arrow indicates an old Roman road, and the white arrow marks the exact spot of my find…so now you know!
It’s always exciting to uncover a piece of history like this…no matter how humble it is!
