Conwy Castle

Perched majestically on the north coast of Wales, Conwy Castle stands as a monumental testament to the power and ambition of Edward I.

Built between 1283 and 1289, this magnificent fortress was part of Edward’s campaign to dominate Wales and quash any hope of Welsh independence.

The strategic location of the castle, overlooking the River Conwy, was chosen not just for its beauty, but for its commanding position, making it an ideal spot for defence. Designed by the skilled architect James of St. George, Conwy Castle was a fortress built for both power and elegance.

With its towering walls and eight massive towers, the castle was a formidable structure, designed to withstand sieges and ensure Edward’s control over the area. The Queen’s Tower, King’s Tower, and imposing gatehouse still stand today, their grandeur offering a glimpse into the past, where they would have witnessed both royal life and military strategies unfold.

The castle’s inner ward would have been a bustling area, housing the royal family, servants, and soldiers, while the outer defenses of the castle, including its moat and the town walls, were designed to protect against any Welsh uprisings.

These town walls have survived remarkably well, enclosing Conwy itself as part of the fortifications. Through the centuries, Conwy Castle played a pivotal role in the military history of Wales, from its use by Edward I to defend against rebellious Welsh forces, to its later use as a royal residence.

Despite the many battles fought within its walls, the castle remained a symbol of the English crown’s dominance over the region. Today, Conwy Castle is not just a reminder of medieval might, but a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors can wander through its ancient halls and towering ramparts, experiencing firsthand the scale and strategic genius behind its design. From the heights of its towers, visitors can look out over the stunning landscape, a landscape that once witnessed countless battles and the rise and fall of empires. Conwy Castle continues to stand proud, a striking reminder of medieval Wales, its walls steeped in centuries of history, offering a glimpse into a time when the castle was both a home and a fortress, a symbol of Edward I’s iron grip on Wales.
