Sword Sharpening Penis Discovered in Spain!

Archaeologists working at the Tower of Meira, a medieval fortress in Galicia, Spain, have made a unique discovery. A stone statue of a penis that may have been used to sharpen swords during the Irmandiño revolts. These were a series of violent uprisings by peasants against the ruling Galician nobility in the 15th century.

The six-inch-long stone penis was found during excavations conducted by Arbore Arqueoloxía, a cooperative specialising in archaeological and restoration services.

Rock Hard

The artifact was spotted on May 19 at the Ría de Vigo estuary, where the ruins of the Tower of Meira are located. The tower was one of several fortresses destroyed during the peasant uprisings.

Phallus Stone
The phallic stone was used to sharpen swords. Bizarrely!

Contrary to its potentially offensive or obscene connotation today, the cooperative explains that in Roman times, such representations did not have an exclusively erotic meaning. Instead, the phallus symbol held a magical-religious significance and was revered as a protective talisman against evil and danger.

The phallic symbol appeared in various forms. These included lamps, masks, pendants, rings, and even on the walls of houses, streets, corners, balconies, doors, and baths.

During their three-year excavation at the site, the researchers have uncovered various artifacts, including pottery. However, the stone penis stands out due to its distinctive wear. This suggests that it was primarily used as a sharpening stone for sword blades.

A Strange Choice of Shape

Its discovery in the context of a violent class uprising adds to its significance. This highlights the symbolic association between violence, weapons, and masculinity that existed during the Middle Ages. It’s one that still persists in contemporary culture.

While whetstones were common in medieval Europe, the intentional phallic sculpting of this particular stone implies that it served both a functional and symbolic purpose for its creators and users. It represents a tangible link to the past and offers insights into the beliefs and practices of the era. The stone penis provides archaeologists with a vivid glimpse into a pivotal period marked by intense social conflicts and devastating battles.

The Arbore Arqueoloxía team aims to delve deeper into the context surrounding the stone’s creation and the people who utilised it. As they continue their excavations at the fortress ruins, they hope to uncover more secrets held by the Tower of Meira.
