When you see a milestone marked with LONDON (?) Miles…where in London is that taking us to?
I mean London is one BIG City!
Well it’s referring to Charing Cross, the historical centre of London.
But why Charing Cross?
Well, it’s all in the name!
The location of Charing Cross was once the site of the original “Queen Eleanor’s Cross”, erected in 1291 to mark the spot where Queen Eleanor of Castile’s body, the wife of King Edward I, stopped on her funeral procession.
The cross was part of a series of memorials placed along the route to mark her resting places.
The original cross was eventually dismantled in the 18th century.
Now, Charing Cross ..cross…(if that makes sense?) is home to a statue of King Charles I on horseback, which stands in the very same location where the Queen Eleanor’s Cross once stood.
This spot, therefore, became a symbolic point of reference for measuring distances into London
So, the reason all roads lead to Charing Cross on these milestones is because of its deep historical connection to the royal lineage.
So now you know!
