SANDALS!!!!

An army marches on its stomach… I think Napoleon said that.

I’ve always marched on my feet personally. And so did the Roman army when they conquered Britain. But… did you know the Romans had several types of ‘sandals’?

Caligae: Heavy-soled, hobnailed sandals worn by Roman soldiers, built for durability and comfort.

Calceus: A closed shoe covering the entire foot, usually worn by Roman citizens.

Baxa: A sandal made from vegetable fibres, leaves, or bark.

Gallica: A boot borrowed from the Greeks, with a wooden sole and thick leather.

Even in sandals, the Romans were ready for a long march… or a bit of style on the streets of Londinium! So…now you know!
