Viking Fashion…Leather, Fur, and Style?

When we think of Viking fashion, we often imagine rugged leather tunics, fur-lined cloaks, and beards to match.

But hold up…TV shows and movies tend to get it all wrong!

While the Vikings did wear wool, linen, and sometimes leather, the luxurious furs and leather garments we see on screen weren’t part of their everyday wardrobe.

Viking clothing was practical and functional, designed to keep them warm during those brutal northern winters.

Wool was their go-to fabric, as it was easy to come by, kept them warm, and was even water-resistant.

Linen, though rarer and more expensive, was used for lighter garments. Leather, on the other hand, was often reserved for accessories like belts, shoes, and straps, rather than full-body outfits.

As for the fur, it’s more of a Hollywood invention…Vikings did wear fur, but it wasn’t as common as TV shows suggest.

Fur-lined cloaks were worn by the wealthier elite, not every Viking. The common folk were wearing layered woolen garments, which were both practical and warm, rather than the showy fur coats we often see.

And let’s talk hair…Viking hairstyles were often practical too, with long hair tied back and beards neatly groomed (yes, they were into grooming, contrary to the “wild Viking” stereotype).

Viking fashion tells us a lot about their culture…it was about practicality, protection from the elements, and, of course, a bit of status.

So next time you watch a Viking series, remember…it’s not all fur and leather.

Those were added for dramatic effect, not historical accuracy!
