Horny Viking: Erect Stone is Viking Phallic Symbol

Archaeologists conducting excavations of Viking burials in Tystberga, Sweden, were taken aback when they uncovered a surprising artifact. One very large stone carved in the shape of a phallus!

Measuring approximately 19.6 inches (50cm) in height, the stone featured distinct “carved lines”. This left no doubt about its intended representation.

Rebecka Jonsson, an archaeologist from Mission Archaeology, explained that upon closer examination, it became evident that the stone had been deliberately modified to resemble a penis.

The unique rock was discovered amidst Viking graves and residential buildings in Tystberga. It was placed in the centre of one grave, resembling a tombstone. According to the team’s Facebook post, such stones are often associated with fertility symbolism. Erect stones often mark male graves and tombstones symbolize female graves.

As a result, these stones have commonly been interpreted as representations of eroded penises.

Larger Than Life

Initial analysis suggests that the stone was crafted from local marble obtained from a nearby quarry. Its surface exhibited both chopped and carved lines, with a pit at the top. This left little room for misinterpretation regarding its intended purpose. The team humorously acknowledged that it was difficult to mistake what the stone was meant to emulate.

Interestingly this was discovered after another recent phallic find. That was a Roman discovery in Britain that was initially thought to be a darning tool due to its placement alongside dozens of shoes and dress accessories.

However, a subsequent analysis has led researchers to propose that the life-size object, measuring 6.3 inches long, was actually used as a sexual implement.
